Advice From Our Physical Therapy Team

When exercising outside, it is important to wear the right gear and clothing attire, in order to avoid injuries. Make sure you have appropriate shoes for the activity you are doing and bring plenty of water with you so you can stay hydrated throughout your workout.

Hiking

Hiking is a great way to get some exercise while enjoying nature. It can help build strength in your legs and core muscles while also providing cardiovascular benefits. When hiking outdoors, make sure you wear sturdy shoes with good grip on the bottom, so that you don’t slip on wet surfaces or uneven terrain. It is also always a good rule of thumb to bring along a map of the area so you don’t get lost!

Running

Running is another popular form of outdoor exercise that has many health benefits, including improved cardiovascular fitness and increased muscle tone in the legs and core muscles. When running outdoors, make sure to wear supportive shoes with good cushioning, so that your feet don’t become sore from the harsh impact. It is also important to always be aware of your surroundings when running outside, and when possible, run with a partner or in areas where there are other people around. Remember, there is more safety in numbers!

Yoga

Yoga is another fantastic way to get some exercise while enjoying nature’s beauty at the same time! Doing yoga outdoors can help improve flexibility while also providing stress relief, due to yoga’s calming effects on both body and mind. When practicing yoga outside, make sure to bring along a mat or towel for comfort, as well as sunscreen if needed.

Cycling

Cycling allows you to explore different areas around town or out in nature while getting a full-body exercise. Cycling helps build strength in both the lower body and core muscles, while also providing cardiovascular benefits similar to running or jogging. When cycling outdoors at night, it is important to wear bright colors so drivers can see you easily. Make sure your bike is properly maintained before taking it out for a ride.
