What Is Kinesio Tape?
You may have seen runners and other athletes wearing brightly-colored tape
stretched over various muscles. This is Kinesio Tape, an elastic therapeutic
strip made of cotton fiber and acrylic adhesive. It is water-proof, sweat-proof,
and remains in-place and effective for days at a time.
How Does the Kinesio Taping Method Work?
The Kinesio Taping Method is
defined by its creators as a “definitive rehabilitative taping technique designed to facilitate
the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability
to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion
as well as providing extended soft tissue manipulation to prolong the
benefits of manual therapy administered within the clinical setting.”
When stretched over skin, Kinesio Tape creates skin convolutions, which
increase the space between the blood vessels and the epithelial tissue
(a.k.a. “interstitial space”). This alleviates pressure, improves
blood flow to the affected area, and creates room for an influx of lymphatic
fluid, which regulates the body’s inflammatory response and can
positively impact the healing process of your injury.
Should I Use Kinesio Tape for My Injury?
There are endless ways to apply Kinesio Tape. Different shapes, cuts, and
taping methods exist to treat patients with a wide variety of injuries
and types of pain. Whether you have injured your back, neck, shoulder,
or virtually any other body part, Kinesio Taping may be valuable in expediting
your healing process and returning your body to homeostasis after an injury.
