What is Causing My Jaw Pain?
There are a number of potential sources for your jaw pain and a handful
of reasons why it may be occurring, including (but not limited to):
- Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)
- Teeth grinding
- Poor posture
- Broken bones in the head, neck, face, or jaw
You may also experience jaw pain following surgery or an accident, such
as a car crash or workplace injury. Stress and anxiety can also play a
role in making your muscles tight, strained, or inflexible.
Sometimes jaw pain may be momentary or short-lived, but other times it
may stick around. When it doesn’t go away or begins to interfere
with your life, that’s when you’re going to need help
treating jaw pain.
Can Physical Therapy Help with Jaw Pain?
Absolutely. After being evaluated by a physical therapist, you will have
a better idea of what is causing your jaw pain and how to attack the problem
with practical solutions. Appropriate treatment for your jaw pain will
vary based on the root cause, and could include any of the following methods:
- Massage therapy
- Alternating hot and cold treatments
- Jaw strengthening and stretching exercises
- Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
- Re-learning posture and certain motions that affect the jaw
