What Is the Recommended Amount of Exercise for Me?

Posted By ProFysio Physical Therapy || 21-Nov-2018

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, Second Edition, about 80% of adults and adolescents in the United States don’t engage in adequate physical activity. Insufficient physical exercise can increase a person’s risk for developing chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and depression.

Fortunately, increasing and improving your physical activity can help prevent such diseases. This article discusses the recommended amount of physical activity for specific age groups, including how a physical therapist can help you work towards a healthier level of exercise.

Recommended Levels of Physical Activity

The Physical Activity Guidelines lists the recommended amount of physical activity applies as follows:

  • Children Ages 3 to 5: The Physical Activity Guides recommends a minimum of 3 hours of daily physical activity for preschool-aged children. Parents should promote active play for these children instead of sedentary screen activities.
  • Children Ages 6 to 17: Pre-teen and adolescent children should have at least 1 hour of daily physical activity to maximize health benefits.
  • Adults Ages 18-64: Most people should engage in a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week, plus two (2) days of muscle strengthening exercises.
  • Adults Ages 65 and Older: The recommended amount of physical activity for adults who are more advanced in age is 150 minutes of weekly aerobic exercise in addition to 2 days dedicated to muscle strengthening and balance training.

Benefits of Utilizing A Physical Therapist

Anyone who wishes to increase the amount of physical activity they regularly perform can benefit from the guidance of a physical therapist. Physical therapists are experts in movement, utilizing evidence-based treatments and exercise techniques to provide interactive care for patients.

After an initial assessment, a physical therapist can create a custom-tailored treatment plan to help you improve mobility, manage chronic pain, promote rehabilitation from injuries, and reduce the risk of future injuries and other chronic diseases.
