What to Expect After a Concussion
It is often difficult to know what to expect in the aftermath of a head
injury. Some people merely have physical symptoms, while others slowly
begin experiencing changes in brain function, personality, appetite, and more.
After experiencing a traumatic blow to the head, most people begin to see
the signs of a concussion in rather short order. In addition to headache,
loss of consciousness, and/or pain near the site of the related external
injury, common short-term symptoms and side effects of a concussion include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Loss of coordination and balance
- Dizziness
- Blurry eyesight
- Sensitivity to light and sound
- Difficulty focusing
- Delayed responses in conversation
- Complaints of mental fogginess
Some of these symptoms are more likely to stick around than others, and
some may even last for years after the initial injury. While most people
make a full recovery and become symptom-free within several weeks, others
may experience what is known as Post-Concussion Syndrome, in which injured
persons develop long-lasting problems, such as:
- Difficulty remembering things and concentrating
- Personality changes
- Irritability, aggression, and other negative changes in temperament
- Sleep disorders
- Depression
The difficulties that arise from symptoms of Post-Concussion Syndrome could
disrupt your life for years, to the detriment over your family, work performance,
social life, happiness, and overall health. However, Post-Concussion Syndrome
can sometimes be avoided by beginning concussion therapy as soon as possible
and receiving ongoing treatment from a trained professional.
