Concussions are considered a traumatic brain injury and, if left untreated, they can result in lasting effects and damage to the brain tissue. This damage can cause physical, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms and problems, which can last for a short period of time or become a long-term condition. If you have suffered a concussion, consider consulting with a physical therapist to receive treatment that can address your symptoms.

Your physical therapist will examine your neurological, orthopedic, and cardiovascular systems to prescribe the treatment that is best suited for your particular needs. Treatment might include:

  • Rest: Limiting your activity is commonly recommended for those who have sustained a concussion. This period of rest will help your brain heal as quickly as possible and alleviate any symptoms you might be experiencing. Rest will not only include limiting your physical activity, but limiting the use of electronics, recreation, work, school, and other daily tasks that might be too demanding.
  • Restoring strength: To help you regain strength, your physical therapist will design an exercise program for you when the time is right and your period of rest is over. He or she will closely monitor your symptoms as you participate in the program.
  • Improving balance: In many cases, concussions are associated with a loss of balance and dizziness. If you are experiencing these symptoms, a physical therapist will be able to address these issues by applying special treatments or through specific exercises, which you might be able to do at home.
  • Reducing headaches: Your physical therapist can also assess the causes of your headaches and include stretches, strength and motion exercises, eye exercises in your treatment to address them. He or she might even use technologies, such as electrical stimulation, to eliminate your headaches.
  • Returning to your usual activity or sport: When your symptoms begin to lessen and ease and you regain your normal strength and endurance, your physical therapist will help you slip back into your normal activities and routine gradually and safely. Resuming these activities too quickly can overload the brain and interfere with the healing of your brain tissue, which can make your symptoms return. Heed your physical therapist’s advice and treatment plan for you to avoid disrupting the healing process.
