Patients suffering from the following conditions can expect a dramatic improvement in pain and function:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tennis/golfer’s elbow
  • TMJ
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Neck pain and headaches
  • Low back pain

Please do not hesitate to contact our clinic if you believe dry needling could be right for you.

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a technique physical therapists use to treat myofascial pain. The technique uses a “dry” needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle, known as trigger points. Dry needling is not acupuncture, a practice based on traditional Chinese medicine and performed by acupuncturists. Dry needling is a part of modern Western medicine principles, and supported by research.

In order to relieve muscle pain, an incredibly thin filiform needle is used to penetrate the skin, targeted precisely by a highly-trained doctor of physical therapy to contact a trigger point. When a trigger point – a skeletal muscle band that is part of a bigger group of muscles – is prodded by the needle, it can cause a rapid decrease in stress and pain throughout the body. The needle insertion may also improve circulation to surrounding tissues thereby triggering the body’s natural healing processes.

What Benefits Are There to Dry Needling?

Dry needling is often delivered as an adjunct to the rehabilitation program but can sometimes be delivered as a stand-alone treatment. Dry needling treatment can have a significant effect on pain and function.

When combined with specific treatments, dry needling can help with:

  • Restoring limited range of motion in joints
  • Alleviating pain without painkillers
  • Releases muscles from chronic states of tension
  • Encourages positive reactions to rehabilitation methods

The benefits to dry needling are only available when it is performed by a trained and knowledgeable professional. At ProFysio Physical Therapy, our Monmouth County physical therapists undergo extensive training and attend educational courses beyond the typical requirements of a professional within this field of practice. Your comfort and care are always our top priorities.
