telehealth PT

Telehealth has gained in popularity since the COVID-19 pandemic, and more people are now considering it a valid and practical form of medical care. This type of health service allows you to speak with a medical provider for diagnostic assessments and certain types of treatments. Telehealth involves meeting your doctor from the comfort of your home via technological tools such as a phone call or videoconference.

Virtual physical therapy can be an effective option for you if you do not require manual therapy from your doctor as part of your care plan. Depending on your needs, you can opt for telehealth physical therapy on its own or combine it with in-office appointments.

What Are the Benefits of Telehealth Physical Therapy?

The primary benefits of telehealth are freedom, flexibility, and convenience. This removes the travel time necessary to come to your physical therapist’s office and can help you fit your sessions into your schedule more easily.

Remote physical therapy also makes care more accessible if you live in rural areas or do not have access to transportation. Receiving specialized care is important regardless of your geographic location and telehealth increases providers’ reach, so they can help more people. It can also make a difference if you are in the early stages of recovering from an injury and need to regain mobility to be able to attend in-person sessions.

When virtual healthcare is a viable option, you can learn how to manage your symptoms more independently, which can motivate you to be consistent with your physical therapy sessions and at-home exercises. Your provider can also tailor recommendations to adaptative solutions you have where you live thanks to certain home features such as walls or furniture to help you manage your pain and symptoms.

How Does a Virtual Therapy Session Work?

Your physical therapist should deliver the same level of care during a virtual session as they would if you came to their practice. If you are incorporating telehealth into your treatment plan, your provider will have cleared you for it.

If this is your first physical therapy appointment, the doctor will conduct a thorough evaluation of your medical history and request you to perform guided motion tests. This helps the therapist assess motion, balance, movement range, flexibility, and adherence. They also ask you questions about your symptoms and what your goals are.

If they determine that you are a good candidate for telehealth physical therapy, they can discuss your treatment plan and answer any questions you may have.
