If you or a loved one has been in an accident and experienced a concussion in the recent past, they have likely already been treated for any physical damage and begun to heal outwardly. However, traumatic brain injuries tend to develop over time and have the potential to create symptoms that are hardly physical. Sometimes they can cause the injured person to develop new difficulties or changes in personality and emotional state.

You or your loved one may be experiencing the psychological effects of a traumatic brain injury if any of the following occur after an accident:

  • Emotional outbursts
  • Mood swings
  • Signs of depression or hopelessness
  • Difficulty concentrating or holding a conversation
  • Aggression or irritability
  • Anxiety

Take special note of these symptoms if the person exhibiting them did not previously experience such issues, or is now experiencing them with a greater frequency or degree of intensity.

Why Do Concussions Cause Emotional Problems?

Concussions can damage the part of the brain that contributes to emotional self-regulation. When this is not functioning properly, people often experience a reduced capacity for controlling their emotional reactions. This can lead to emotional responses that are over-the-top, disproportionate to the current situation, or even unrelated to anything that is currently happening. In addition to reduced emotional control, concussions can damage the brain in such a way that causes injured persons to become intensely emotional for no apparent reason. (Keep in mind that this is not only true when someone is agitated or angry, but also when they experience other emotions, such as depression or excitement.)
