What Is Snapping Hip Syndrome?

Snapping hip syndrome is a condition that is characterized by a snapping or popping sensation originating around the sit bone of the pelvis. While the cause of the condition is not well understood, the sensation occurs when muscle tissue or tendon slides or stretches along a bony protrusion in the hip – often when someone changes positions with their hip.

Although pain isn’t normally associated with the snapping sensation, athletes and dancers can experience weakness in the area that can negatively impact their mobility. Symptoms include tightness and swelling near the hip, and sometimes impaired ability to perform activities of daily living.

What Is the Treatment for Snapping Hip Syndrome?

Snapping hip syndrome is primary treated through rest and the use of cold compresses to address any accompanying swelling. People should avoid walking or other activity that results in pain. In extreme cases, people with snapping hip syndrome may require the use of crutches.

A physical therapist can develop a comprehensive treatment program to ensure optimum recovery potential while mitigating aggravation of the injury.

Physical therapy treatment programs for snapping hip syndrome may include:

  • Range of motion. Physical therapists can implement treatment strategies that focus on restoring normal range of motion for the affected leg and hip area. Results can be achieved through manual therapy techniques such as “trigger point release” and “soft tissue mobilization.” Stretching exercises that target tight muscle areas can also promote regular movement and improve muscle balances.
  • Strengthening exercises. A physical therapist can teach patients with snapping hip syndrome exercises that target affect muscle groups for strength improvement. Strength restoration can be accomplished using resistance bands, weight-lifting, and exercise equipment such as treadmills and ellipticals. Core strengthening exercise can also help restore strength and address muscle imbalances.
  • Pain management. Patients with snapping hip syndrome can benefit from pain management treatment therapies such as cold-heat applications, electrical and ultrasound stimulation, manual therapy, and stretching.
  • Recovery Promotion. Another benefit of physical therapy when addressing snapping hip syndrome involves close supervision under a professional physical therapist to optimize recovery time.
  • Recurrence Prevention. A physical therapist can also prescribe home-exercise routines aimed at maintaining strength and flexibility in the hips, legs, and core muscles. Improved strength and flexibility in the area can decrease the risk of future recurrence for snapping hip syndrome.
