An ankle sprain happens when the ligaments of the ankle are torn or stretched too far, and these injuries are extremely common. Statistics show that about 25,000 Americans sprain their ankle on any given day, and symptoms cause mild pain to debilitating pain and weakness. While they frequently affect athletes, it can happen to anyone who while jumping, running, or pivoting, or even from something as simple as stepping awkwardly on an uneven surface.

Symptoms of an ankle sprains include:

  • Ankle pain and swelling
  • Bruising
  • The ankle is warm to the touch
  • Inability to put weight on the affected limb

Do I Need to See a Doctor for an Ankle Sprain?

You may wonder if you need to see a doctor for treatment for ankle pain, and hope it goes away with “RICE” – Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. While this is often the doctor’s orders for a sports injury, you should seek medical treatment if you are experiencing severe pain or swelling that doesn’t improve with at-home treatment after 2 to 5 days. If you cannot put weight on your foot and the ankle feels unstable, you should seek immediate medical attention. The earlier you seek treatment, the more likely you are to regain your pre-injury strength and reduce your risk of reinjuring the ankle.

Will I Need Physical Therapy for an Ankle Sprain?

Qualified physical therapists are familiar with ankle sprains, and have a variety of techniques to address your symptoms and promote optimal healing for your ankle sprain. Because physical therapists are well-versed in sports injuries, they can also help you return to optimal function before resuming play. Your physical therapist will also help you be prepared so you prevent future sprains, by teaching you good stretching habits and helping you recognize your physical limits.

Physical therapy is useful for ankle sprains, especially for athletes, because it helps promote earlier weight bearing, and normalizes your walking pattern. Without treatment, the ankle can lose flexibility, and your balance and strength will also be compromised. A skilled physical therapist can help you regain any lost strength and progress to more strenuous physical activities as quickly and safely as possible.
