Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Pregnancy

While pregnancy can bring about many aches and pains as your body goes through continuous changes, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common occurrence. Studies suggest that anywhere from 30 to 60 percent of women may experience CTS during pregnancy. Fortunately, there are ways you can manage the symptoms associated with this painful condition. Read on to learn more about how you can manage CTS throughout your pregnancy.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition that commonly affects the hands and arms, characterized by pain, numbness, and tingling sensations. This is due to the compression of the median nerve, which is one of the primary nerves found in the wrist and hand.

It is important to note that CTS tends to get worse over time, making it imperative that you notice the signs early on. Signs and symptoms that may suggest the presence of carpal tunnel syndrome include:

  • Numbness, tingling, or burning in the fingers, hands, or wrist
  • Shooting or shocking sensations in the fingers
  • Pain or tingling sensations that travel up the forearm
  • Weakness of the hand
  • Loss of dexterity
  • Dropping things from weakness or numbness

How it Can Be Treated During Pregnancy

While many women who experience CTS during pregnancy report that symptoms went away within one year following delivery, it is recommended that the associated symptoms be treated during pregnancy. Here are some ways to effectively manage the condition:

  • Avoid irritating activities like typing on a keyboard or texting.
  • Wear a wrist brace or splint to bed.
  • Apply ice or a cold compress to the affected hand or wrist
  • Rest and elevate your affected wrist when possible.
  • Talk to your doctor about what over the counter pain relievers you can take.
  • Speak to your physical therapist about possible treatment options if your pain persists.
