Getting Regular Exercise at Home

In light of the current novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, millions of Americans have been asked to stay home in hopes of limiting and even stopping the spread of the viral illness. As we spend more time indoors, it can be tempting to fall into sedentary behaviors of relaxing and lounging—however, this can wreak havoc on your overall health. Here are some tips to keep you up and moving while you stay home for the health of our community.

Get Up and Stretch

With many people folding themselves working from home, it can be difficult to disconnect from your work day long enough for physical activity. One simple way to break up long bouts of sitting is to get up and stretch. Set a timer every hour to remind you that it’s time to get up and get moving to keep your joints and muscles from becoming stiff.

Take an Online Workout Class

Sometimes it can be difficult to stay motivated to workout when you’re at home. Joining an online class can help you to stay accountable and committed to your regular exercise routine. Whether you prefer spinning classes or yoga, there are a plethora of options available online to keep you active at home.

Clean Your House

Whether you realize it or not, giving your house a deep clean once a week can count toward your recommended exercise for the week. From cleaning your kitchen to mowing your lawn and washing your car, these chores are actually examples of moderate-intensity workouts. Grab your disinfectant and make your way around the house to get in some light aerobic activity.

Take a Walk

Although we have been urged to stay home, you are still able to make your way outdoors for physical activity. Whether you’re a runner or you would just like to step outside for some fresh air and much-needed sunlight, you can walk or run around your neighborhood. Remember to follow the proper social distancing protocol if you do decide to venture outdoors, wearing a cloth face covering and remaining at least 6 feet away from others.
