The 2026 FIFA World Cup ended July 19 with Spain defeating Argentina in the final at MetLife Stadium, right here in East Rutherford, New Jersey. For six weeks, this region was the center of the soccer world. Now that the tournament is over, we want to talk about something that doesn't make the highlight reels: what happens to the players—from professional to recreational—who spent that same six weeks on the field and came out of it hurting.

Professional players suffer injuries from match congestion and high-intensity pressing tactics, whereas youth and recreational players are more vulnerable to rapid workload spikes, growth-related flexibility imbalances, and a lack of structured warm-up routines.

While acute sprains and strains account for most soccer injuries, overuse conditions and chronic load-related issues also represent a significant portion of cases, particularly in youth and professional players facing high match congestion. The World Cup didn't create that problem, but for the millions of recreational and youth players in New Jersey and across the country, we think it’s worth addressing now more than ever.

Why Soccer Injuries Linger

Soccer asks the body to do several things that are individually demanding and collectively punishing: repeated high-speed sprinting, abrupt deceleration, cutting and pivoting on planted feet, explosive kicking from multiple angles, and sustained aerobic effort across 90 minutes. Most recreational and youth players aren't conditioned for all of those demands simultaneously, especially when facing sudden spikes in playing time during summer tournaments and camps without adequate load management.

While traumatic injuries like ACL sprains or ankle turns happen in an instant, many common soccer issues—such as tendinopathies and low-grade muscle strains—develop insidiously without a dramatic moment that stops play.

Players are using to pushing through pain and discomfort. By the time they seek physical therapy, an acute issue that could have been managed effectively in its early healing phase has developed into a chronic, compensatory problem requiring months of rehabilitation.

The Injuries We See Most + What They Mean

Hamstring Strains

Hamstring strains are a common soccer injury at every level. They often happen during sprinting, especially when a player is accelerating, chasing a ball, or reaching top speed. The hamstrings must control the leg as it swings forward and prepare the foot to hit the ground; and the high-speed eccentric load can cause injury.

What many players don't realize is that a mild hamstring strain that returns to "fine" after a few days hasn't necessarily healed. The scar tissue that forms in the muscle can be less extensible than the original tissue, meaning the hamstring is now shorter and tighter under load than it was before, which can make recurrence more likely. Players with a prior hamstring injury are at much higher risk of re-injury if strength and control are not fully restored.

The treatment question isn't just "Does it hurt?" It's: "Has it healed, and has the tissue been reconditioned to handle the load?"

Groin & Adductor Injuries

Groin and adductor injuries are the ones players often push through. The pain is hard to pinpoint and tends to come on gradually from repeated cutting and kicking. Groin strains often linger if ignored. The treatment approach depends on correct diagnosis; a tendon issue needs controlled, progressive loading. Simply resting it often makes it worse long term.

This is the counterintuitive part of groin rehab that trips people up. Rest reduces pain temporarily. But the adductor tendons need graduated loading to heal and strengthen. A player who rests for two weeks, feels better, returns to the field, and immediately reloads an underconditioned tendon is not recovering. They're cycling.

Ligament & Meniscus Injuries

Knee injuries cover a wide spectrum. Some present dramatically (the classic non-contact ACL tear during a cut, the pop, the immediate collapse). Many don't. A knee that swells after a game and feels "loose" or "off" without significant pain still needs to be evaluated. Research confirms that restoring strength symmetry and neuromuscular control—not just time—is the true measure of readiness to return to sport.

Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains are an underestimated injury in soccer. Players roll an ankle, sit out for a weekend, feel better, and return. What often doesn't get addressed is the proprioceptive deficit (the ankle's ability to sense position and react to unstable surfaces) that persists long after the swelling resolves. This deficit can cause recurring sprains because, while the ligament may have healed, the neuromuscular system hasn't.

The Location Question

One of the biggest mistakes players make is assuming the location of pain tells you the source of the problem.

Hamstring pain could be a true muscle strain or referred pain from the low back.

Knee pain might be driven by hip weakness or mechanics.

Groin pain could involve multiple structures, not just the adductors.

We bring this up because it changes the treatment. If you treat the wrong structure, you delay recovery and increase the risk of the problem becoming chronic. A thorough evaluation will help determine whether the treatment plan addresses the true driver of the pain.
